Because of the amount of "bogus" switchcraft switch tips out there, I was asked to create this web page on Gibson switch tips. These original style of switch tips where used on Gibson vintage guitars from 1947 to 1960 (inclusive), and are made of Catalin (carbolic acid and formaldehyde). Often they are called Bakelite, but really they are Catalin (which is a less fiber version of Bakelite).

Catalin was a poured resin plastic developed by the Catalin plastic company. Bakelite came earlier, and was in granular form, molded under high pressure which becomes hard under intense pressure and heat. Bakelite could be added to almost any material, such as softwood, asbestos, or fiber, which was the "catalyst" and the Bakelite instantly make it more durable and hard. Bakelite was a key ingredient in most of the weapons used in the Second World War. It was also used as a electrical insulator. For this it proved to be very effective. So effective that it is still used as such today.

Because of the amount of "bogus" PAF (Patent Applied For) Gibson humbucker pickups out there, I was asked to create this web page (thanks to GW Dean and BurstMeUp for information and pictures). This web page includes information on the pickups themselves *and* their plastic mounting rings. The originality of the pickups and their mounting rings are both important factors in the integrity of a vintage Gibson guitar.

There are some basic facts that should be known about these first-generation humbucking pickups. First PAF pickups came about in 1956 on Gibson steel guitar models, and on 1957 on many Gibson spanish guitar models, and lasted to about 1962 to 1965. Nickel plated part models transitioned away from PAF pickups first around 1962, since these guitars were sold in greater numbers. Gold plated part guitars can often be found with PAFs (or one PAF and one Patent# pickup) as late as 1965. PAF pickups of course have two internal coil bobbins under a 1.5" x 2.75" metal cover with one bobbin having a row of six adjustable slot-head poles, and the other bobbin being non-adjustable.

Florida-based visual artist Jeannette Parssi decided to bring something extra to the table when invited by Gibson Guitar to participate in the second installment of Gibson's Miami GuitarTown Project. After painting the naked Epiphone Casino electric guitar Gibson shipped to her for the event, Parssi was able to have the instrument autographed by all seven members of the Allman Brothers Band, which will no doubt add to its value when auctioned for charity later this year. "The band was more than happy to help," says Parssi, "as it seems they always are when it comes to supporting worthy causes. I really appreciate all of the band members signing the guitar for me. It turns my artwork into a real collector's item, which will benefit some very worthwhile charities in Miami."
